Cake without frosting - - YUCK !

08-12-02 Cake without frostingI recently attended a friend's Birthday Party.

Everything was perfect (the location was ideal; the decorations were over-the-top; the invitees were friendly; the food was delicious; the Host was gracious; etc) except for one thing - - the Birthday Cake had no frosting.

How can one have a Birthday Cake WITHOUT frosting?  It's NOT a "Birthday Cake" ! It's NOT a "Birthday Party" !

Carrying this philosophy to another level, how can one work 60 hours a week (which most of us do these days) and have "no fun" either at work, or outside of work?  That NOT "a life."

A great deal is written and spoken about "work-balance" these days.  Most take that topic seriously - and put it into practice; but, too many don't.

This writer thinks that one's work either has to be fun, or one must find fun (however one may define that term) outside of their work.

According to Sylvia Ann Hewlett, the former President of the Center for Work-Life Policy in New York, more than one-fifth of professionals work more than 60 hours a week.  Some law firms attempt to soften that workload by reducing the number of meetings, allowing employees to do more work at home, and even urging firm members to fully utilize their vacation time. But, nothing is quite as good at reducing one's work-stress than one doing something every day that is pleasurable and unrelated to work.

We know that is easier said than done, but it MUST BE DONE for one's survival.
